Position Summary

The Shahbaz provides routine nursing care for elders in the Cottage, which houses a small group of elders (ten) sharing a central living area in a home-like setting.  In addition to routine nursing care, the Shahbaz also coordinates the overall home keeping needs of the cottage unit (menus, groceries, clean-up, laundry, etc.).


Primary Responsibilities

All employees of St. Martin’s in the Pines are expected to maintain strict confidentiality, ensure compliance with policies and procedures, and uphold the safety and well-being of our residents. Employees are expected to demonstrate an appreciation of the heritage, values, and wisdom of the residents as well as the aging process.  In particular, the Shahbaz:

  1.  Assists elders with the activities of daily living, including bathing, dressing, personal hygiene, toileting, etc.
  2.  Coordinates food service for the cottage, including developing menus and identifying grocery needs, preparing and serving meals, and maintaining the cottage kitchen
  3.  Assists in the development and implementation of individualized care plans and notifies Clinical Support Team of any changes in an elder’s condition
  4.  Provides additional care for elders with special needs (i.e. tubes, catheters, ostomies, oxygen, etc.)
  5.  Assists  with and/or performs restorative and rehabilitative procedures, including range of motion exercises, and documents in accordance with functional maintenance plans (FMP)
  6.  Observes, monitors and reports symptoms of potential skin breakdown/ulcers and intervenes with appropriate skin care as instructed
  7.  Conducts rounds with oncoming shift, participates in group report, and answers all elder call lights
  8.  Rotates to other coordinator roles as assigned(i.e., scheduler, food, activities, care, Team)


Secondary Responsibilities:

  1. Maintains required Certified Nursing Assistant Certification and participates in required annual in-services
  2. Performs other duties as assigned

  3. Security Level:   High – Access to elder health information, access to Cottage facility, supplies, and pharmaceuticals
  4. Reporting Structure:  Self-managed team reporting to Cottage Guide


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  1. Certified Nursing Assistant in good standing in state of Alabama
  2. Completion of St. Martin’s in the Pines Shahbazim Program Training, as well as ServSafe Course, First Aid, CPR, Culinary Training, and training on Self-Managed Work Teams
  3. Experience in a position documenting data flow sheets and working with direct patient care
  4. One year experience working in a nursing home, hospital, home health agency or other health care facility is preferred



Work hours are full-time and scheduled in routine shifts


Physical Requirements

Able to lift or exert force up to 200 pounds occasionally, up to 100 pounds frequently, and up to 50 pounds constantly with the assistance of team members or mechanical device in turning, lifting or assisting with resident transfers, moving objects or materials

Able to communicate with others in order to report emergencies and respond effectively to elders, family members, and other staff members



Frequently exposed to body fluids, infectious waste, odors, and communicable diseases
