Position Summary

The RN Charge Nurse provides care to elders and supervises the day-to-day nursing activities provided by Certified Nursing Assistants.  This position ensures medications are administered, documented, and provisioned properly. They also provide nursing care and monitor the clinical status of elders on their unit.

 

Primary Responsibilities

All employees of St. Martin’s in the Pines are expected to maintain strict confidentiality, ensure compliance with policies and procedures, and uphold the safety and well-being of our residents.  Employees are expected respect elders’ rights and demonstrate an appreciation of the heritage, values, and wisdom of the residents as well as the aging process.  In particular, the RN Charge Nurse:

  1. Ensures that  Certified Nursing Assistants are performing their job duties and rendering quality care through compliance rounds
  2. Allocates staffing based on resident mix, level of care, census and resident needs, reassigning personnel as needed.
  3. Contacts physician’s office daily to validate or receive orders and document telephone orders on the Physician’s Order Form and has forms mailed if applicable
  4. Records new/changed diet order forms and provides to administrative assistant for retention
  5. Prepares medications and assists elders in taking medications as ordered by the physician, documenting all records accurately (including narcotics)
  6. Place daily order for prescribed medications, over-the-counter medications and personal supplies, and equipment as necessary
  7. Monitors assigned personnel to assure that safety regulations are being followed, work areas are maintained in a clean and sanitary manger, and personnel participate in fire safety and disaster preparedness drills
  8. Charts nurses’ notes in an informative and descriptive manner that reflects care rendered
  9. Collaborates with elder’s attending physician as well as social workers and sponsor to address status or change in elder’s condition and notes changes on 24 hour report
  10. Ensures refrigerator temperature is kept between 32 – 40 degrees and documented daily
  11. Completes accidents/incidents reports on elders/sponsors/staff, provides appropriate care/instructions and forwards reports to supervisor
  12. Implements nursing care and nursing personnel policies on assigned unit, including managing nurses assigned to shift, ensuring a timely response to resident needs and call lights, and monitoring documentation for accuracy and timeliness
  13. Oversees completion of all admissions to unit and evaluates care of new residents with acute care issues (i.e. elders with infections, pressure ulcers, depression, changes in condition, etc.)
  14. Keeps the Director of Nursing informed via shift reports and chart audit findings for purposes of Utilization Review
  15. Supports facility programs for infection control, accident prevention, skin audits and rehabilitation programs
  16. Oversees and assists in calls to doctors as needed in reference to orders, completes consultant reports (pharmacy, diet, etc.) and reviews test results and follows up as necessary

 

Secondary Responsibilities:

  1. Reviews complaints or grievances and report to Administrator
  2. Participates in staffing allocation, employee performance evaluations, recommendations concerning employee disciplines, etc.
  3. Participates in the development, implementation and maintenance of infection control program
  4. Provides orientation for new RNs
  5. Makes rounds with physician as necessary
  6. Performs other duties as assigned

  2. Budget Responsibility:  N/A
  3. Security Level:   High – Access to patient data, pharmaceuticals
  4. Reporting Structure:  direct supervision

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  1. Graduate of accredited RN program
  2. Active RN license in state of Alabama
  3. Geriatric experience preferred
  4. Experience in a position requiring strong organizational and time management skills
  5. Demonstrated ability to provide leadership and supervise others
  6. Must successfully complete DETA Brain Series or Care and CPR

 

Schedule

Work hours are full-time and scheduled in shifts with occasional overtime

 

Physical Requirements

Able to lift or exert force up to 100 lbs. occasionally, up to 50 lbs. frequently, and up to 25 lbs. constantly in turning, lifting or assisting with elder transfers

 

Extensive standing and walking, moving intermittently throughout the day

 

Safety/Environmental

Exposed to body fluids, infections, odors, and behavior of elders with or without cognitive impairments
