Position Summary

The Certified Nursing Assistant provides basic nursing care to elders under the direct supervision of a licensed nurse or therapist.


Primary Responsibilities

All employees of St. Martin’s in the Pines are expected to maintain strict confidentiality, ensure compliance with policies and procedures, and uphold the safety and well-being of our residents. Employees are expected to demonstrate an appreciation of the heritage, values, and wisdom of the residents as well as the aging process. In particular, the Certified Nursing Assistant:

  • Performs basic nursing procedures within the scope of the role but not limited to feeding, personal care (Activities of Daily Living such as bathing, dressing, etc.) and I Activities of Daily Living (using telephone, reading, etc.)
  • Obtains and documents elder vital signs including temperature, blood pressure, respiration and pulse
  • Observes, notes and reports to charge nurse any physical, mental or emotional change in elders
  • Maintains accurate elder documentation
  • Cleans and stores equipment and supplies immediately after use and promptly reports any defective or broken items or equipment to charge nurse
  • Transports elders to various areas as directed by charge nurse
  • Completes nursing assistant assignment sheets and ADL documentation every shift on each assigned area
  • Assists elders to maintain optimal level of function through Functional Maintenance Plan (FMP) and documents progress accordingly

Special Note regarding Restorative Nursing Assistants:

The Restorative Nursing Assistant (RNA) will carry out the functional maintenance program under the direction of Supervisors, the Restorative Coordinator, and/or Therapists; activities include ambulating and transferring patients, wheelchair positioning, monitoring restraints, rehab dining program, etc.

In addition, the RNA will maintain an education binder with all the skills checklists taught by the therapists (the Restorative Coordinator will keep a copy of the binder as well).

The RNA will communicate with the Certified Nursing Assistants, Nursing Staff, Therapists, and Restorative Coordinator regarding the status of an elder, any requests for guidance in working with challenging elder situations, and encouraging carryover by the Certified Nursing Assistant staff.

Secondary Responsibilities:

  1. Participates in education programs, in-service and meetings as required (including interdisciplinary care plan meetings)
  2. Performs other duties as assigned

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  1. Nursing Assistant certification by state approved program
  2. Geriatric experience helpful
  3. Experience in a position with demanding workload and customer contact helpful


Work hours are full-time, 32 – 40 hours per week based on a rotating schedule on an assigned shift which includes weekends and holidays.


Physical Requirements

Prolonged or constant standing, walking, bending, stooping, reaching, pushing and pulling through the shift


Must be able to exert force occasionally up to 200 pounds with the assistance of a team member or mechanical device (positioning, transferring or transporting elders, equipment or supplies); able to lift up to 50 pounds frequently and up to 25 pounds constantly without assistance


Must have fine hand coordination, ability do distinguish temperatures and ability to communicate and follow written and verbal instructions



Exposed to body fluids, infections, odors, and behavior of elders with or without cognitive impairments
