Position Summary

The Companion assists the elders who are functionally, physically, and or socially impaired and require limited assistance and/or companionship. The Companion’s role is to assist elders with those activities of daily living that they are unable to perform without help, fostering at all times elder’s independence and freedom of choice. The care plans (duties) are defined by the program coordinator, elder and sponsor. This plan is coordinated/collaborated with the residential facility care supervisor.


Primary Responsibilities

All employees of St. Martin’s in the Pines are expected to maintain strict confidentiality, ensure compliance with policies and procedures, and uphold the safety and well-being of our residents. Employees are expected to demonstrate an appreciation of the heritage, values, and wisdom of the residents as well as the aging process. In particular, the Companion:

  1.  Assist with activities of daily living (ADLs) as defined by care plan to include:
    1. Dressing and undressing (clothing should be clean and appropriate for the season)
    2. Bathing and personal hygiene such as dental hygiene, nail care, hair care, foot care.
    3. Mobility devices (cane, walker, wheelchair, crutches) including monitoring and assistance of safe transfer and ambulation techniques
    4. Care of ADL devices such as eyeglasses, contact lenses, hearing aids, etc.
    5. Assist to meals including pushing or stand by ambulation.
    6. Assist with toileting needs to include reminders and changing briefs.
  2. Instrumental Activities of Daily Living:
    1. Provides assistance with telephone (assisting with calls, phone repairs, hearing and vision adaptive devices)
    2. Performs and assists with housekeeping tasks such as vacuuming, emptying trash, cleaning bathroom, making and changing bed.
    3. Assists with mail delivery, residents’ personal correspondence
    4. Prepares lite meals or obtains meals from dining area as requested.
    5. Assists with light laundry as requested to include washing, drying, ironing, folding and putting away.
    6. Acts as a companion in promoting social interaction, transporting to activities, beauty shop, etc.
  3. Observes and reports changes in elders’ physical and emotional condition to facility care staff.


Secondary Responsibilities:

  1. May run errands on or off campus within a 10-mile radius.
  2. Performs other duties as assigned per care plan.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  1. High school diploma or equivalent
  2. Nursing Assistant certification by state approved program is preferred
  3. Must possess a high degree of interpersonal relations skills and capability of relating to a variety of people and personalities
  4. Must possess a high level of flexibility and tolerance to adjust to changes in work loads, assignments, hours and days (ie, weekends, evenings and holidays).
  5. Successful completion of Dementia Training series, First Aid and CPR.



Work hours are variable per week which includes weekends and holidays.


Physical Requirements

Prolonged or constant sitting (up to 2 hours without breaks), standing, walking, bending, stooping, reaching, pushing and pulling through the shift


Must be able to exert force occasionally up to 200 pounds with the assistance of a team member or mechanical device (positioning, transferring or transporting elders, equipment or supplies); able to lift up to 50 pounds frequently and up to 25 pounds constantly without assistance


Must have fine hand coordination, ability do distinguish temperatures and ability to communicate and follow written and verbal instructions


Must possess sight/hearing senses, or use prosthetics that will enable these senses to function adequately so that the requirements of this position can be fully met.



Exposed to body fluids, infections, odors, and behavior of elders with or without cognitive impairments
